SWEALTERING CITIES EVENT

Event Report: Public Forum on the Health Impacts of Extreme Heat

Date: Thursday, 5th February 2026

Location: Parramatta Town Hall, Parramatta

The Hills Doctors Association successfully launched its 2026 program with a well-attended and engaging public forum on the health impacts of extreme heat. Held at the impressive Parramatta Town Hall, the event drew more than 200 attendees and filled the venue to capacity, reflecting strong community interest in the growing challenge of summer heat and its health consequences.

The evening brought together members of the medical profession, community members, and advocates concerned about the impact of rising temperatures on public health—particularly in Western Sydney, where heat exposure can be especially severe. The Hills Doctors Association partnered with Sweltering Cities to deliver an informative and practical program.

A diverse panel of speakers offered perspectives from medicine, public health, and community advocacy. Each presentation was engaging and thought-provoking, highlighting the evidence linking extreme heat with significant health risks and outlining practical strategies for individuals, communities, and policymakers. The variety and quality of speakers ensured the evening maintained both depth and accessibility, with many attendees commenting on the clarity and relevance of the presentations.

Adding to the atmosphere of the evening was a choir performance that provided a reflective and uplifting interlude. The choir sang two beautiful pieces that were warmly received and contributed to the sense of community that characterised the event.

Guests were also treated to a generous vegetarian supper, which proved both delicious and popular among attendees. The shared meal created an opportunity for conversation and networking among doctors, advocates, and members of the public.

Importantly, the forum achieved its central aim: encouraging greater public awareness of the health impacts of extreme heat and empowering attendees to become advocates for safer, cooler urban environments. Participants were encouraged to engage with their elected representatives and to support initiatives that promote heat-resilient infrastructure and policies—particularly across Western Sydney, where communities are increasingly vulnerable during the Australian summer.

Overall, the evening was widely regarded as a great success. With a full hall, strong participation from the medical community, excellent speakers, and enthusiastic community engagement, the forum marked an inspiring start to the Hills Doctors Association’s year of activities. The event reinforced the vital role that doctors and community members can play together in advocating for healthier, cooler, and safer cities
